Launceston is home to great mountain biking areas. The LMBC has been very active in developing the sport of mountain bike riding and boasts a growing membership base and a full racing calendar. In 2008 LMBC recognised the need to provide junior aged riders with basic skills, knowledge and a comfortable atmosphere to help them develop their enjoyment for the sport. The six riders who completed the inaugral program rated it highly and demonstrated measurable benefits in fitness and skill levels.

Aims:

To encourage male and female, 13 to 18 year olds into mountain bike riding and racing. To develop the Team members’ mountain bike skills, knowledge of training, bike maintenance and to facilitate cross country racing experience. Given such exposure, participants may reach the standards to be considered for a TIS development squad.

Costs:

With thanks to the generous support of the Team’s sponsors and volunteer labour from LMBC club members, Junior Team members are only required to pay for costs associated with racing licenses, travel and the upkeep of their equipment

Before joining the 2008 junior team, Zac had been cross country riding for 4 months. This is what Zac has to say about being on the 2008-2009 team…

“The program has helped me in many ways ... having weekly individual training programs has helped with my cross country skills and also [being part of the program has taught me about] things to bring to a race.”

What did you learn during the LMBC Junior Team Program?

“I know now that it is a time consuming sport if you want to get to a high level, but it is definitely worth it. I found out I had skills in this discipline of riding which I didn't know I had.”

What was the best thing that you got out of doing the Junior Team program?

“I found something that I can be good at in life and continue to better myself at as well.“

What is your most memorable mountain biking moment?

“The 24- hour enduro race at Trevallyn, It was an amazing experience.”

Why should other people think about doing the program?

“I think people should join as it is a great experience to try out mountain bike riding in Tasmania. And at the same time I think it is a great opportunity to try mountain bike riding out while being coached by experts which covered everything from regular maintenance on your bike to professional cross country riding.”

What are you aiming to achieve on the mountain bike next season?

“I am aiming to achieve a better ranking next season and become physically fitter on the bike.”
